What is the point of alimony?

There is really very little alimony given these days. It is usually given only to unemployed women and it is given for half the length of the marriage. It is designed to allow the unemployed to train to enter the work force. The only people who get lifetime alimony are those who are over 60 or 65 and of a marriage of long duration and no other means of support.
