Uncontested divorce - CA - who pays for it?

Married 6 years (including 1.5 years separated). No kids. Uncontested. No shared ets. Both have debts, and little money saved. He may have more hidden real estates investments but I don't care about them. I left. He filed for divorce. I submitted my response, but it was rejected due to some missing paperwork and I was trying to get a waived fee/reduced fee due to financial hardship, but I make too much. He filed to have his fee waived as he is unemployed. He recently sent me new paperwork and is trying to file as abandonment - so he doesn't have to pay his fee... He told me not to respond to it... that it would be resolved if I did not respond. ....this makes me feel uneasy - I want to respond and pay my fee, but I don't want to get stuck paying his share - will I? Am I just out of luck cuz he beat me to it the filing process? It is uncontested, dissolution, grounds are irreconcilable differences.
