Is super smash bros brawl fun?

I played melee for the game cube for an hour after I borrowed it from my firend, it did not seem like a very fun game, all I could do was attack enemies on a side scrolling field, but it was the highest selling game cube game, and now I see people being all excited about brawl, so what is it that makes it so exciting and fun,
